Composition Itraconazole 200mg

Itramed is an antifungal medication that is used to treat various fungal infections. It belongs to a class of drugs known as triazole antifungals. Itraconazole works by inhibiting the growth and reproduction of fungal cells, thus helping to eliminate the infection.

Here are some key points about itraconazole:

1. Uses: Itraconazole is primarily used to treat systemic fungal infections, such as invasive aspergillosis, histoplasmosis, blastomycosis, and candidiasis. It can also be used to treat fungal infections of the skin, nails, and mucous membranes.
2. How it works: Itraconazole works by interfering with the synthesis of ergosterol, an essential component of fungal cell membranes.Itraconazole can treat many different fungal infections. Many of these fungal infections are rare; however, they can be detrimental to the immunocompromised. Itraconazole (sometimes abbreviated  treats blastomycosis, histoplasmosis, and aspergillosis and has FDA approval as a treatment for these infections. However, itraconazole has also shown efficacy in treating paracoccidioidomycosis, coccidioidomycosis, and candidiasis, but it does not have FDA approval for these conditions. In addition to treating infections, itraconazole can be used as prophylaxis in patients at risk of these systemic fungal infections. Some patient populations that frequently use itraconazole prophylaxis are patients with HIV, those receiving chemotherapy, or people who have had an organ transplant. Itraconazole offers excellent prophylaxis for these immunocompromised patients due to its broad-spectrum coverage, safety profile, and minimal fungal resistance.In addition to treating systemic infections, itraconazole can also treat superficial fungal infections like onychomycosis, which has FDA approval. However, the cure rate of onychomycosis with itraconazole therapy is only 63%. Itraconazole can also treat moderate to severe seborrheic dermatitis and other topical mycoses, although this use does not have FDA approval. Although itraconazole is an effective therapy for seborrheic dermatitis, antifungal shampoos and topical steroids are first-line therapies. When treating seborrheic dermatitis, itraconazole administration occurs as a pulse therapy, which means large doses of the drug are administered intermittently to avoid side effects but achieve the drug’s therapeutic effects.

Dosage of Itramed

200 mg PO once daily. If there is no obvious improvement or there is evidence of progressive fungal disease, increase the dose in 100 mg increments to a maximum of 400 mg/day PO. Administer dosages above 200 mg/day in 2 divided doses. For life-threatening cases, 200 mg PO 3 times daily for the first 3 days and continue treatment for at least 3 months until clinical parameters and laboratory tests indicate the active fungal infection has subsided. Guidelines recommend itraconazole solution.
